Botox After Care Instructions

What’s normal after this procedure?

  • Small amounts of swelling, a temporary bump, redness, bruising, a mild to moderate headache, and sensations such as tingling or mild itching. These effects are all very common and are considered a normal part of the process.
  • You should begin to see effects in 3-5 days, but peak effect should be reached after 14 days. The benefits start to wear off after 3-4 months.

How do I protect my results and reduce side effects?

  • Remain upright for 2 hours.
  • Do small extra contractions of the muscles treated every 20 minutes for the first hour.
  • When cleansing, avoid pressure and use gentle strokes away from the eyes.
  • Avoid facial massages, facial procedures, or electrical stimulation of the face for the next 2 weeks.
  • Avoid wearing tight caps or garments in the area that has been injected.
  • Avoid alcohol and exposure to UV and extreme heat (i.e. sauna, steam, sun beds, very hot showers, strenuous exercise, etc.)
  • Do not apply make-up for approximately 6 hours unless it is mineral-based.
  • Avoid Ibuprofen, Aspirin, or Naproxen pain medication, as these can cause blood thinning and increase bruising. Tylenol is ok if not contraindicated by your physician.
  • Wash your hands immediately post-procedure and do not touch your face in the areas injected for 6 hours.
  • Wear sunscreen every day!
  • The results of your treatment can take up to 14 days to take full effect. Usually patients notice a change in 3-5 days. It takes time for the muscles to lose strength and the lines to fade following Botox treatment. Please wait until 14 days have passed before assessing your results.

When to be concerned:

  • If you develop a side effect, such as a dry eye, droopy eyelid, or heavy brow.
  • Any other side effects you think are important.
  • If you feel distressed or worried in any way.
  • Routine adjustments can be carried out from day 14 after your procedure. Please call to aschedule an appointment for follow-up after 14 days!
